Producer Nigel and cameraman John have been filming on Islay for their latest BBC Scotland commission entitled - 'Hebrides - Scotland's Islands on the Edge of the World'.  We are delighted that these well-known professionals have found the time in their busy schedules to come to the Centre to tell us some of the stories from behind the cameras, and show us some extracts from their work.

BBC commission major new series featuring Islay wildlife

BBC Scotland have commissioned a series of programmes from Nigel Pope and John Aitchison, two of the best known producers of television wildlife documentaries.  Filming will take place over two years and will result in four episodes based around the seasonal cycle in the Hebrides.  It is anticipated that Islay will feature prominently.  Set out below is an overview of the series produced by Maramedia, the production company owned by Nigel and John.

The INHT met with Nigel Pope last week - and we hope to bring you updates throughout the production process.  The series is expected to be broadcast some time in 2013.

The team made its first visit to Islay last week - and was successful in obtaining 'exciting' footage - particularly featuring Golden Eagles on the Oa.

Loch Indaal Lighthouse

Loch Indaal lighthouse was built by the Stevenson family (of Robert Louis Stevenson/Treasure Island) in 1869.  The original Victorian clockwork interior was intact until the building was 'modernised' by the Northern Lighthouse Board around the year 2003.

It is an excellent place to watch for otters as the rocks beneath the tower offer a good view up and down the coast in an area where they are often seen.

The story of the "Lighthouse Stevensons" is to be told by a Caledonia TV programme currently in production for BBC Scotland early next year.

Les Wilson, the director and a partner in Caledonia TV has a house in Port Charlotte.
