We noticed this orange stuff on some of the Rock Roses at Killinallan and were worried it was a parasite. It was difficult to tell whether the flowers affected were worse off than the unaffected ones - no noticeable signs (to the non-expert!) Any ideas?

You'll find a copy of the "Naturalists' Handbook - Plant galls" by Redfern & Askew in the library in the Centre. Try that.

It looks like Scots Burnet Rose rust, Phragmidium rosae-pimpinellifoliae,which forms these orange gall-like things. See http://www.bladmineerders.nl/gallen/gallenlijst.htm for a nice picture - scroll down the index till you get to Rosa and click on the name of the Phragmidium.
