Red in tooth and claw

There were just five Mallard ducklings to be seen today at Smelly corner where yesterday there had been eleven. Of those five, four had become separated from the mother duck and were being blown ever further away by a stiff breeze. She seemed completely unconcerned and was heading off in the wrong direction, several hundred yards away with her one remaining youngster feeding as she went. Ducks probably cannot count beyond one. I will be very surprised if five remain tomorrow.
