Hatch of Small Tortoiseshells (Aglais urticae)
There was quite a hatch of Small tortoiseshell butterflies in Port Charlotte over the weekend, which was lovely and warm and sunny. The insects were very bright and fresh looking, which would suggest they were newly emerged from the pupae rather than individuals that had overwintered.
This photo was taken a couple of years ago - rather later in the year as can be seen from the Buddleia...
