Gordon Yates film show

The always eagerly awaited annual film show by Gordon Yates will take place on Thursday 21st February at 7.30 pm in the Natural History Centre in Port Charlotte. This is his last reel-to-reel film. After this, his conversion to video will be complete.
Gordon has sent the following note about it:
My last film is entitled " A World of Birds" and basically shows where I have been when I am not on Islay or in the Pennines! It shows the search for breeding Great Northern Divers in Iceland followed by the wildlife of Spitsbergen and the North East Greenland National Park (Barnacle Geese included, of course). After that, we look for Snowy Owls in Alaska and finish with Fairy Terns in the Seychelles - which might bring back bad memories for two of your audience!
So, it's obviously not to be missed, and we look forward to the usual large and enthusiastic audience.

Golden eagle by Gordon Yates

We are delighted to be able to welcome back Gordon and Pauline Yates (who are visiting Islay for the 91st time this month).  We have a real treat for us in store this time with a showing of their new DVD entitled "Raptors" which will feature no fewer that 16 birds of prey and owls, many of which were filmed on Islay. 
The showing will take place from 7.30 on Thursday 23rd February at the Natural History Centre in Port Charlotte and will immediately follow our AGM, which is usually legendarily brief. 
Everyone is welcome, as are donations to the INHT.  We will be rattling our bucket enthusiastically...

Roe Deer and Fawn - Gordon Yates

That storm again... And welcome back Gordon and Pauline!!

It was good to welcome Gordon and Pauline Yates back on to the island today.  I think they are genuinely quite shocked at the damage done to the trees and bushes here by the big storm of last week.  Gordon pointed out that the loss of biomass is bound to have serious consequences as the lack of green leaves results in lower insect populations which will in turn inevitably impact on bird populations and brreding success.
The top picture above is what is left of a hawthorn bush in Bridgend.  A Blackcap was defiantly singing away from the middle of all the devastation.  The lower is a shot of a tree that came down on top of my shed in the garden at Lorgba!!

European Otter (Lutra lutra) - Gordon Yates

Thanks to Gordon for this lovely shot of an otter taken on Islay.  Gordon has kindly sent us a sequence of otter shots to be used in a new presentation of Islay's mammals being prepared for the new season at the Centre in Port Charlotte.
