Flora and Fauna at Killinallan 20th June 2011

Here's the list and what a list today! We had five folk on our ramble, each enthusiastic and it was encouraging to see new species of orchids appearing, my first sighting of Common Blue for the year (freshly emerged and pristine) and most of all, the Small Elephant Hawk Moth, which is a first for me, as was the Sexton Beetle. Thanks to all for their contributions. Do let me know if I've missed anything off. I suspect there may be some jealous eyes reading this now!

  1. Another wonderful set of sightings! We can't wait to get back to Islay and join you on some of them in August!

  2. The Small Elephant Hawk-moth is not only new for you, but it is also new for Islay! There is just one other record for this area, one seen in north Jura a few years ago.

  4. Subject to confirmation by someone who knows his beetles better than I do, the Common Sexton Beetle appears to be new for Islay (and Jura and Colonsay).
I'm beginning to lose count of how many new species you've found this year!!

  5. Hi Karl,
Are you the family that joined us on a few family activities last year, including pond dipping? Glad you're enjoying the blog. Becky
